All birding experience levels are welcome in joining SVC for a hike at Deer Creek Hills Preserve, learning about the birds that call this place home and the way they interact with nature!
Meet at the historic Eagle Camp Corral at 6:45 to enjoy a stroll through the preserve’s blue oak woodland in an area visited only by docent led outings. Western Bluebirds on the hunt for nesting cavities and Yellow-rumped Warblers bathing in Crevis Creek along with Northern Flicker’s searching the ground for food between the blades of new grass are common sites. Additionally we will look for Nuttal’s, Acorn, Downy and possibly Lewis’s Woodpeckers searching for food among the trunks and branches of the oaks. This outing transects the blue oak woodland on the Salt Spring Slate Formation emerging on its east side into the open grass uplands of the Gopher Ridge Metavolcanics. Falcons and hawks forage here in the grasslands. Keen eyes may spot a Golden Eagle or a Ferruginous Hawk as well. Tree Swallows should have arrived and we can often catch sight of one of our Rock Wren pairs along the creek.
Docents also have a fair knowledge of the wildflowers that may be on display along the route and are always happy to share. Our return trip will pass through an area that supports Rufous-crowned Sparrows and Lawrence’s Goldfinch and on occasion a singing Loggerhead Shrike.
Our exact route and distance will depend on the results of scouting activities by docents the preceding week, but usually covers about 3 miles.
Wear warm clothing in muted earth-tone colors, to blend with the terrain, and sturdy boots for uneven surfaces. Birding scopes, binoculars and/or cameras, are highly recommended for any birding outing, as well as water and a snack. All levels and ages of birding enthusiasts welcome.
We finish up back at Eagle Camp Corral. Optionally you can bring lunch and join us in the creation of the day’s e-bird list.
