All birding experience levels are welcome in joining SVC for a hike at Deer Creek Hills Preserve, learning about the birds that call this place home and the way they interact with nature!
Resident Rufous-crowned Sparrows, Wilson’s Snipe and vocal (& many times visible) Virginia Rail are among our favorites on this trip. In 2017 we spied 31 Wilson’s Snipe at once, sunning themselves at the South Pond. Join experienced DCH docents in this outing to a less visited part of Sacramento’s largest open space preserve.
The pond is a nice riparian area usually with Great Blue Heron, Common Gallinule, Virginia Rail and Pied-billed Grebe as well as a small assortment of ducks; plus highly visible Song Sparrows and Red-winged Blackbirds. A nice assortment of swallows is usually present by this time (Barn, Violet-green, Tree, Cliff plus White-throated Swift). A Great Horned Owl pair nest in the area.
The route also transects the blue oak woodland and skirts a small group of western gray pine where we can get nice views of birds across a small canyon. One to three pair of Rufous-crowned Sparrows call this area home, along with Lark Sparrows, Bushtits, Ruby-crowned Kinglets and American Pipits. Bullock’s Orioles add a splash of orange.
We will meet at Eagle Camp Corral at 6:45am. Promptly at 7am we will carpool in vehicles with higher clearance from the corral to the hiking start near the South Pond. This is a cross country trek on cattle trails. 3-4 miles will be covered this hike. Mute toned clothing please and no stark white. Wear warm clothing and sturdy boots for uneven surfaces. Birding scopes, binoculars and/or cameras, are highly recommended for any birding outing, as well as water and a snack. All levels and ages of birding enthusiasts welcome.
At the conclusion we will return to Eagle Camp Corral. Optionally you may bring your sack lunch and join docents in the creation of the day’s ebird list.
Attendees must pre-register online. Space is limited.
Enthusiasm, a love of birds and ability to complete the hike are the only requirements.
Please register for this outing below. SVC cannot guarantee the gates will be open, unless a reservation to attend is made in advance (minimum one week).
