Camp Pollock Docent Orientation

February 25, 2023 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

Free

Join an amazing group of trained volunteers to help with docent-led activities and service projects at Camp Pollock. No experience is necessary, just a desire to learn about the historic property, help maintain this special place, and to share your knowledge with the public.

Our projects and events would not happen without fantastic volunteer support. Let us help you find a way to invest your time in nature on the beautiful lower American River Parkway.

Topics covered during the orientation will introduce you to the history of Camp Pollock, the native plants and invasive species that live there as well as a discussion on riparian habitat and heritage orchards. Following the presentation, there will be a site walk to give you hands-on experience as you learn about this hidden gem along the American River.

What is a Docent – A docent is considered a long-term volunteer and must be willing to attend a minimum of 2 trainings and support 3 activities, which adds up to around 20 hours per year. Docents help maintain the property and assist staff in providing guidance to new volunteers.

Most opportunities take place on Saturday mornings with some Native Nursery projects occurring during the week. Docent projects include:

  • Native Garden Maintenance: Weeding, leaf blowing, pruning, raking, general clean up in and around garden beds
  • Propagation Team in the Native Nursery: Sanitize pots, re-pot starts to 1 gallon containers, water plants
  • Event Crew: Clean-up for events like weddings, lodge/deck/courtyard rentals and group camping
  • Service Day Leadership: Help coordinate, train and manage volunteers during the regularly scheduled Saturday service days throughout the year
  • Maintenance Projects: Clean, repair and maintain as needed the campsite & fire pit, walkways & paths, irrigation systems, building exteriors, mowers and tools. Clear the lawn of debris for mowing, weed whip, mow, and work with larger equipment

Have another skill or idea? Please let us know!

The presentation portion of the training will be held in the historic Myrtle Johnston Lodge and will include a safety orientation covering the entire property. The site walk will be around 1 mile in distance, trails are level and ADA-accessible.

If you are interested in becoming a Camp Pollock Docent, but cannot attend in person, please contact Carly Amatisto, SVC Program Coordinator at 916-612-3719 or email her at outreach@sacramentovalleyconservancy.org for more information.

Please RSVP below before 6pm on February 24. In the “Send RSVP confirmation to” section, be sure to put your email address. We apologize for the redundancy and any confusion. Returning docents who have created a profile in the portal, you can uncheck the “hide my data” box if you’d like your photo to appear in the Who’s Attending section.
