History Hike – Gold Rush
February 1, 2020 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm
Free
Step back into time and join us for the Deer Creek Gold Rush. Lead docent David Scharlach will guide us on a hike 3-miles long and a century and a half back in time as he retells the story of the search for gold at Deer Creek.
In 1849, it is said that a gold nugget the size of your fist was found nearby on the Cosumnes River at Cooks Bar. By 1850, the town that sprang up there boasted a large hotel, stores, saloons and 500 inhabitants. Miners flooded into Deer Creek Hills to scour the gulches as the “easy pick’ens” from the river were soon exhausted. By 1860 Cooks Bar was a ghost town. Nonetheless, miners continued to work the hills right up to the early 1940s. All told, this little mining district produced at least 1,700,000 ounces of gold!
Put your boots on the same ground and come chase some color with us. Chances are you’ll be greatly rewarded! Hike out 9am back by noon.
Wear comfortable closed-toed hiking shoes, a hat, and dress in layers. Bring snacks and plenty of water for before, during, and after the hike. Portalets are available at the trailhead but there is no running water on the Preserve.
Space is limited and this hike will reach capacity, so please register early.
